What happens if you miss a connecting flight because of a delay

What happens if you miss a connecting flight because of a delay?
Example: My plane leaves Seattle, WA and lands in Detroit MI, where I'm supposed to take another plane from Detroit to Coumbus, OH. What if the airport at Seattle is delayed and the delay is so long that by the time I get to Detroit, the Detroit to Columbus flight has already left? Do I just have to go find a hotel room or something, even though it was the airline's fault I missed my plane? Just curious, I'm not actually IN the situation, it just occured to me :P Thanks!

Normally the airlines will book you on the next flight going to your destination. They can even book you on another airline. If there are no flights available the airlines will overnight you at a hotel and pay for your room and a meal. You would then leave out on the first flight the following day. This has happened to me, it was inconvenient, but not the end of the world.

Ah! I was in this situation flying from Melbourne, Australia to Toronto, Canada. Stopped in Sydney, Honolulu and Vancouver. Long story short - flight was delayed for five (very, very long) hours in Honolulu and was five hours late arriving in Vancouver hence.. I missed my plane to Toronto. Went to the Air Canada's service desk and they fixed it up then and there. No extra charges. Not they would have wanted too, either.. man was I angry! :P Hope that helps! :)

probably not

No. I've flown that trip a few times. That's the cheapest I've seen. Last time I flew from Columbus to Long Island it was $250 round trip.

You could have beaten that price on www.ytbtravel.com/gordonsa weekend getaway under $250 option. But that was a great question and good find

You did very well! I just researched fare history on this route, and $118 is the cheapest level in at least 10 months. http://www.farecompare.com/search/month-add-day.html?departure=CMH&destination=NYC&currency=USD&tripType=roundtrip&nonstops=false&p=1&cabin=Coach&date=20070601&key=3f4b8404dce1f1c421640a4f8d0c9be9ae8b4d32321712cd&days=20070612

You need to go to several different sites to price it out and then see who offers the lowest rates. This will be the best way to find out. All the online discounters are all pretty safe to go through. Just be sure you understand policies, etc. in case you need to cancel or change your flight. Look over what you book several times to make sure it is what you want/need. As far as the one site that is the best, it's really hard to tell you. They will all vary and change all the time. One site may be lower for one person, higher for the next. You just have to do your research and see what yo find. In my expereince, the cheapest way to go is directly through the airline. In my past dozen trips, that I can remember, the airline has always been cheaper than the online discounters. Just look around and see what you can find. Check around online. There are several online discounters, like expedia, priceline, orbitz, etc. This is usually the cheapest way to go. But you should also check directly through airline sites to see if they are running a special. It is also easier to make changes if you use the airline directly instead of a discounter. For example, air tran often offers discounted tickets on Tuesdays and Thursdays and it is cheaper than through other online sites. I prefer to go with the air sites directly. Not only are they usually a less than discounters, but if you have to make a change or cancel, it is a lot easier than going with the discounters. Also watch in the newspapers and such, they often advertise specials in the newspaper . Hope this helps!

Columbus is a small airport. Sometimes they have low fares, sometimes you pay for the fact that it is a small airport. Would you consider driving to Cleveland (airport code CLE) or Cincinnati (airport code CVG)? If you are willing to drive 2 hours, you will probably save money.
